Fangtastic! The world’s best vampire-spotting locations.
Instead the thrills and chills have been left largely to zombies, serial killers and creepy clowns. The Passage has changed that. As with many sci-fi and horror shows, this commentary then offers a set of familiar, tricky questions: do scientists have the right to perform deadly experiments and even accidentally create new species in order to save what remains of the human race? Is there any justification for performing those tests on children, when data suggests a child might be the key to uncovering a cure?
Vampires Aren’t Pretty
A disorder named EPP, Erythropoietic Protoporphyria, a genetic mutation that affects oxygen in the blood and makes people allergic to the sun. Porphyrias, a group of eight known blood disorders, affects the body's molecular machinery for making heme, which is a component of the oxygen-transporting protein, hemoglobin. Paw and his investigators discovered the genetic mutation that triggers EPP, spreads light on biological mechanisms that are responsible for all the vampire stories.
Paw has also identified a therapeutic target for treating EPP.
To produce hemoglobin, the body goes through a process called porphyrin synthesis, which mainly occurs in the liver and bone marrow. Any genetic defects that impact this process can interrupt the body's ability to produce heme; the decreased heme production leads to a buildup of protoporphyrin components.
In the case of EPP, type of protoporphyrin called protoporphrin IX accumulates in the red blood cells, plasma and sometimes the liver.

Due to this, people with EPP experience swelling, burning and redness of the skin after exposure to sunlight. Not as a vampire, nor a zombie — but as a Scottish samurai warrior mortician. That would be the chief, Cliff Bill Murray, at peak Murray-ness , Ronnie Driver, the true master of deadpan here , and Mindy Sevigny, a nervous Nellie in nerdy glasses.
But it soon becomes clear that something more serious is happening. Wristwatches stop working.
